My picks for Worlds

Can't sleep and don't really know why. So Graciemag.com has an article with the editor's picks for Worlds at the black belt level.

Here are my picks

My predictions:

Roosterweight Final: Bruno Malfacine vs Felipe Costa
Champion: Bruno Malfacine

Light Featherweight Final: Guilherme Mendes vs Samuel Braga
Champion: Guilherme Mendes

Featherweight Final: Cobrinha vs Rafael Mendes
Champion: Cobrinha

Lightweight Final: Michael Langhi vs Jonathan Torres
Champion: Michael Langhi

Middleweight Final: Marcelo Garcia vs Kayron Gracie
Champion: Marcelo Gracia

Medium heavyweight Final: Tarsis Humphreys vs Eduardo Telles
Champion: Eduardo Telles(keep sleeping you'll see)

Heavyweight Final: Braulio Estima vs Bernardo Faria
Champion: Braulio Estima

Super Heavyweight Final: Roger Gracie vs Ricardo Demente
Champion: Roger Gracie

Ultra Heavyweight Final: Gabriel Vella vs Rodrigo Cavaca
Champion: Garbriel Vella

Black Belt Absolute Final: Roger Gracie vs Xande Ribeiro
Champion: Roger Gracie

I don't think any of these picks need to be explained. Except for maybe the telles pick. Barral is plagued with injuries(according to Graciemag) so his conditioning could be suspect and telles is finally fighting in the right weight class I think. And we all know he has the skills to suprise. You don't get offered a DVD deal from WMA w/o serious skills. Plus, he's my BJJ idol(w/o turtle I'd be trash) I want to see him on top.

Oh and in case you didn't know Terere is back as of Worlds 2011. Whoop Terere, Whoop Terere!!!

Until next time

Comments

  1. I donated some cash to the Terere rehab fund via paypal. I would be really excited to see him make a healthy comeback.

  2. me too georgette. I can't wait on his comeback. I'm like a teenage girl waiting to get into the concert headlined by her favorite boy band.(yes, I just said that and no I'm not ashamed of it; I'm a TT BJJ mark what can I say) I love watching him compete. It's like poetry in motion beautiful stuff. Nino Schembri(you want a good omoplata study this guy seriously) is coming back too, he said he'll try to make this Worlds but he'll definitely be at next years. Black belt competition just keeps getting better and better. I'll be up there with those guys someday.

Why Physical Therapy sucks

Years ago, maybe 2010 I don't actually remember, I posted a short post here called "Why." That post was about why I prefer to fight able-bodied opponents as opposed to fighting opponents with disabilities. To sum the post up, I do it to prove a point. In that post I mentioned that Physical Therapy(which will be referenced as PT for this post) sucks. This post will explain why. Let me preface by saying PT isn't bad and is in fact a necessary medical service as it's great for pre-surgery, post-surgery, and injury situations. That doesn't change the fact that PT is grossly misused. That's because PTs attempt to make your body work "normally"; what they should do is enhance the way your body already functions. Let's assume you're a cerebral palsy patient who has never walked on your own power and you use a wheelchair for mobility. Instead of putting you in a walker or on crutches and "going walking" around the room. They should p...

Gay in BJJ

Truthfully, this would probably go over better as a YouTube video, but I figured that I haven't actually written on this blog in a while, so this is a good excuse to do just that. As the title states, I'm going to talk about being gay in the sport of BJJ. The thing that stopped me from posting this in the past was I didn't want to beat a dead horse. After all, this topic has been done talked about many times over in the BJJ community, but never from perspective(to my knowledge) of someone who was openly gay and active in the BJJ community. I'm that guy. So I will list questions I get both inside and outside the BJJ community as the answers are for the most part exactly the same. 1) What do I do if I suspect my training partner is gay? Answer: Ask him/her. It really is that easy. However, the manner in which this question is asked is really important. You know your training partner, so handle the situation accordingly(privately is always best regardless of the method o...

drilling

Muscle Memory... its a term every athlete knows and has a love-hate relationship with. Muscle memory simply means your body can perform the said action with you having to think about it. Its like tieing your shoe you just do it. Drilling allows techniques to become automatic and require next to no effort, that's why we love it. But it requires drilling that's why we hate. Let's face it, no basketball player wants to do 500 suicides in defensive posture. However, if you do it it'll make sure your back pedal and side step are on point. The same applies to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sparring is the fun part so we all want to do it. However, only sparring=bad technique i know my technique was off the first three months I was training with Maguilla; I knew it was because of my two years and eight months not training. But not drilling didnt help. I must say I'm learning to love it. In my opinion its the best way to warm up because you break a sweat and refine technique at the sa...
